A Carioca, Rua da Misericórdia, 9, Bairro Alto, T 21 342 03 77. Mon-Sat 0900-1900. Since opening in 1937 with a swirling art nouveau façade, this charming coffee importer has provided the daily caffeine injections to strung out Alfacinhas. Tea and coffee from the former colonies dominates the range with blends from Cape Verde and East Timor. Also sells all manner of tea and coffee lover’s paraphernalia.

Casa Macário, Rua Augusta, 272-276, Baixa, T 21 320 90 00. Mon- Sat 0900-1900. Founded in 1913, this traditional art nouveau fronted deli stocks a range of whisky, tea, coffee, cigars and chocolates and an excellent selection of dusty bottles of port including a 1948 vintage costing E928.

Chá Casa Pereira, Rua Garrett, 38, Chiado, T 21 342 66 94. Mon-Sat 0900-1900. Founded in 1930, by José Francisco Pereira, this family business is now run by the Pereira’s widow. An indulgent array of vintage ports, home-made chocolates, syrupy ginginhas, herbal teas and heavenly aromatic coffee from East Timor, Brazil, Colombia, São Tomé blended and ground to your liking. There is another branch, Casa Pereira da Conceição, on Rua Augusta. Maintaining decades of traditionalism, the store has archived records of the type of coffee selected by individual clients and it is customary for many Lisboetas to select the brand enjoyed by their ancestors.

Manuel Tavares, Rua da Betsega, 1A, Baixa, T 21 342 42 09. Mon-Sat 0900-1900. Dating from 1860, Manuel Tavares is one of the oldest shops in the Baixa and the most renowned deli in Lisbon. The cavernous cellar is stocked floor to ceiling with fine wines and vintage ports including blends and vintages that are hard to come by anywhere elsewhere. Upstairs, there is a pungent array of cheeses and meats from the hinterland and exquisite home-made chocolates. The English-speaking staff are incredibly efficient and are always keen to aid with selection.

Napoleão, Rua dos Fanqueiros, 70, Baixa, T 21 886 11 08. Mon- Sat 0900-1900. Enormous port emporium near the junction with Rua de Comércio, with battalions of port experts on hand to guide you through its magnificent range.

Tábuas Charcuterie, Rua Barros Queirós, 45-51, Baixa, T 051 22 05 58. Mon-Sat 0900-1900. Wondeful deli, just off Largo São Domingos, with dangling hams, German sausages, smelly cheeses, fresh herbs and spices and bounties of tropical fruit and vegetables including mandioca. Attached is a snug tasca with balcão seating serving fresh dourado, Alentejano meat, and the house speciality frango brosteado (roast chicken). Mon-Fri 0830- 1930, Sat 0830-1930.
