Still in rehab from the straitjacket of the Salazar dictatorship, Lisbon might not immediately spring to mind as a gay-friendly, liberal-thinking kind of place. However, gay tourism is definitely on the up. Pretty, pink and intimate, its the perfect backdrop for a buoyant gay and lesbian community nurtured by a clutch of pro-active organizations, upbeat nightlife, an inspired film festival and an annual gay pride event. Príncipe Real is the centre of the gay scene, with correspondingly high property prices and stylish bars and restaurants. Parque Príncipe Real is one of the most popular, and safest, cruising areas in the city. The spirit of tolerance extends to Bairro Alto with streets lined with colourful mixed bars, gay-friendly restaurants and the kind of touchy- feely clubs that put Lisbon on every clubbers agenda during the 1990s (see also Bars and clubs). Over recent years, facilities have improved with the opening of more salubrious saunas and the countrys only exclusively gay hotel in Bairro Alto. Cruising
