Lisbon is economically accessible from London and regional UK airports, with scheduled flights from as little as £100. In October 2003, new low cost airline Now added Lisbon to its proposed schedule for 2004, and other budget airlines are expected to follow suit. Other options including travelling by Eurostar and TGV down to Spain and connecting with sleepers to Lisbon, as well as the 40-odd-hour Eurolines coach services, work out much more expensive and are impractical for a short visit.
With seven muscle-aching hills to negotiate, labyrinthine streets and medina becos and travessas, getting around Lisbon, especially in the blaze of summer, can be a physically demanding experience, but one that is graciously aided by trundling trams, Gothic Eiffel-esque elevators and an efficient bus and train network. Lisbons clean, efficient and artful underground is a pleasure to use, though generally, when nosing around the centre and old town quarters, your feet are all youll need. An excellent train network links Lisbon to the Atlantic beaches and Sintra in less than 45 minutes.
