      Books

Birmingham, David, A Concise History of Portugal (1993) Cambridge University Press. The best, and most succinct, introduction to Portugal’s history with particular reference to the 1755 earthquake, the declaration of the republic and Salazar years.

Camões, Luís Vaz, As Lusiadas (1572) Carcanet. This is Portugal’s national work, an epic poem which evokes Vasco da Gama’s triumphant ‘discovery’ of the sea route to India.

Kaplan, Marion, The Portuguese: the land and its people (1992, updated 1998) Penguin. An excellent introduction to Portuguese culture with insightful psychoanalysis within a well-framed historical perspective. Despite a revision, it already feels rather dated.

Lopes Antunes, António, Act of the Dammed (1993) Secker and Warburg. A humorous portrayal of the corrupt ruling class of the Salazar dictatorship, as a rich family attempt to prevent their valuable possessions from being seized by militant soldiers.

Lopes Antunes, António, An Explanation of the Birds (1992) Secker and Warburg. In this bleakly funny novel Rui, a political historian, takes his Marxist wife Marília away for a weekend in order to break the news that their relationship is over. In the middle of the novel is Rui’s obituary which eulogises and at the same time satirizes his life.

Pessoa, Fernando , The Book of Disquiet (1992) Serpent’s Tail. Set in Lisbon, this is the autobiography of Pessoa’s pseudonym, or heteronym, Bernardo Soeres, published posthumously.

Queiros, da Eça, The Illustrious House of Remires (1900) Penguin. Eça da Queiros started his writing career as a disciple of Zola and was considered one of the leading intellectuals of the ‘Generation of 1870’. Protagonist Gonçalo Ramires is an allegory of Portugal; a aristocratic fantasist with mad-cap dreams of future success as novelist and politician.

Queiros, da Eça, As Maias (1946) Penguin. Eça’s acknowledged masterpiece and, it is claimed, the novel with which the Portuguese most identify. The decline of three generations of a wealthy aristocratic family reflects the ideological, cultural and political developments in Portugal from the beginning of the 19th century.

Saramago, José, The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis (1998) Harvill. Since winning the Nobel prize in 1998, Saramago has emerged as Portugal’s most renowned contemporary writer. In this novel he unravels Fernando Pessoa’s heteronym Reis who returns to Lisbon from Brazil to the insufferable straightjacket of Salazar’s dictatorship.

Saramago, José, Baltasar and Blimunda (2001) Harvill. Set in Lisbon and Mafra, this engaging plot centres upon the construction of a flying machine and has a Latin-American magical realist style.

Vieira, Edite, The Taste of Portugal (2000) Grub Street. Recipe book of regional specialities, mouthwatering photography and cultural contexts.

Wilson, Robert, A Small Death in Lisbon, (2000) Harper Collins. Murder mystery providing a fascinating insight into Portuguese neutrality during Second World War and the Salazar dictatorship.

Zimler, Richard, The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon (2000) Overlook. American Zimler weaves an intricate detective yarn set in Lisbon during the massacre of the Jewish conversos in 1506. Based on fact, the novel follows the fortunes of a young Kabbalist attempting to discover the truth behind the death of his uncle.
