Gay Pride (last week in Jun) A week of events organized by ILGA, above including debates, films, presentations, parties and transvestite shows held at various venues across the city. Celebrations culminate in the annual National Pride March which begins at Praça do Marquês do Pombal and climaxes with the Arrail Pride Party. See portugalpride.org for further details, or contact ILGA. Festos dos Santos Populares (12-13 Jun 2004) Lisbons most buoyant festivities are the Feast Days of the popular saints. The Saints days are: for Anthony (Jun 12-13), John (Jun 23-24) and Peter (Jun 28-29). On the night of the Jun 12, the whole city goes wild. Streets are decorated with paper chains and strewn with tinsel and fairy lights. Fado music pumps into every nook and cranny, sardines are consumed by the tonne and friends and lovers exchange basil pots with carnations bearing love notes. On Jun 12 there are also parades up the Avenida da Liberdade. The old town bairros of Alfama and Mouraria are particularly frenzied, with celebrations continuing until dawn. On St Peters Day a boat procession sails along the Tagus.
