Bullfighting season (May-Sep) The Campo Pequeno bullring is one of the largest in the world. In the north of the city, its worth a visit to view its anachronistic Moorish architecture. The calendar of corridas and bullfighting events run until September. Renovation work has been ongoing for considerable time and the bullring is optimistically scheduled to reopen in summer 2004. Pilgrimage to Fátima (May 12-13) On 13 May 1917 the Virgin Mary allegedly appeared before three shepherd children in the countryside close to Fátima. Today, this small town is Portugals most potent symbol of Catholic devotion. Each year, more than four million pilgrims converge on the town. Estoril Open Tennis (Dates vary) The Estadio Nacional in Cruz Quebrada hosts this ATP/WTA international clay court event.
