Dotted Line

EEE Gambrinus, Rua Portas de Santo Antão, 23, T 21 342 14 66. Daily 1200-0130. One of Portugal’s best seafood restaurants, Gambrinus, established more than 70 years ago, is something of a local institution. There is an extensive and varied menu of seasonal specialities, with tantalizing exotic flavours, served by knowledgeable and friendly staff, in the moody wood-panelled dining room. Specials served daily include empadão de perdiz on Mondays and sopa rica de peixe on Wednesdays.

EEE Solmar, Rua Portas de Santo Antão, 108, T 21 342 33 71. 1200-1500, 1900-2300. With soaring marble pillars, underwater mosaic tiles, ornate fountains and huge aquariums jammed with lobsters, Solmar is a shimmering 1950s classic. Famous among well-heeled Lisboetas for its abundant seafood and in particular its açorda de mariscos. In winter more heart-warming dishes such as wild boar and venison are also served. The adjacent Solmar Café is a popular post-theatre hang-out.

EEE Terreiro do Paço, Lisboa Welcome Centre, Praça do Comércio, T 21 031 28 50. Mon-Sat 1130-2300, Sun 1230-1500. Featuring on Condé Nast Traveller’s list of the world’s top 50 restaurants, Terreiro do Paço certainly hasn’t rested on its laurels. Award-winning chef and creative zealot Júlia Vinagre creates thoroughly modern renditions of ancient Portuguese recipes and regional specialities including roast kid and veal. Açorda devotees will relish the açorda de camarão. The wine list is superb and the traditional, intimate setting, under colonnaded arcades, hard to beat.

EE Casa Alentejo, Rua Portas de Santo Antão, 58 , T 21 346 92 31. Daily 1200-1500, 1930-2400. The 17th- century neo-Moorish Palácio Alverca is now home to the Alentejano cultural centre and restaurant and is worth a visit alone to admire the central courtyard, designed by Portuguese architect Silva Júnior in 1914 and richly decorated with azulejo tiles and paintings. Upstairs is where nostalgic Alentejanos partake of hearty açorda soups (a runny mixture of stale bread and garlic, topped with boiled egg). There is codfish açordas, delicious octopus rice, grilled seabass and ‘bullock’s entrecôte cooked the wine trader’s way’. The stewed turbot with pasta is highly recommended.

EE Valentino, Rua Jardim de Regedor, 15-30, T 21 346 17 27. Daily 1200-2400. Reliable, conveniently located Italian restaurant with outdoor seating and a cavernous, split level interior with intimate alcoves. Popular with Lisboetas enjoying lazy Sunday lunches, there is a child-friendly repertoire of decent thin base pizzas, oozing calzones and rich pastas. The portions are mammoth but meagre use of herbs and spices can render some dishes rather bland. Fine fish and meat dishes push the prices up to the expensive price category. Excellent tiramisu for desert.

E Bom Jardim, Travessa de Santo Antão, 11 T 21 342 43 89. Daily 1200-2300. Known as the ‘Rei del Frango’, The King of Chickens has become a Lisbon legend, famous for its spit-roasted chicken. And its a bargain, dished up with fries, salad and jugs of rough house wine, for less than E10. Troubadours, theatrical waiters and persistent flocks of rose sellers add to the rustic charms.

EEE Comida de Santo, Calçada Engenheiro Miguel Pais, T 21 396 33 39. Daily 1230-1530, 1930-0100. For inspired Brazilian cooking and an effervescent atmosphere, this unassuming restaurant decorated with cheerful Brazilian paintings, is worth a splurge. The Vatapá, E14.50 and Picadinha à Mineira, make for a reliable initiation. The highly potent caipirinhas are the best in town. Worth reserving at the weekend.

EEE Consenso, Rua das Academia de Ciéncias, 1-1A, T 21 343 13 13. Closed lunchtimes Sat, Sun and holidays. Classy restaurant in the cellar of the former house of the Marquês de Pombal, combining a classical atmosphere with inventive international cuisine. There are four themed dining areas to choose from; fire, earth, water and air. Thoroughly indulgent gastronomy including grilled monkfish served with a rich cream sauce and duck with sticky chocolate sauce.

EEE Conventual, Praça das Flores, 45, T 21 390 91 96. Mon and Sat 1930-2300, Tue-Sun 1230-2330. Favoured by prime ministers and pop stars, Conventual is one of Lisbon’s gastronomic highlights. Inspired dishes are served in a dining room decorated with religious artefacts (testifing to its previous incarnation as a convent). Memorable dishes include partridge flambéed with brandy and served with a chestnut sauce.
