Sport in Lisbon is dominated by football, the one major sport where Portugal has enjoyed international recognition. The mere mention of legendary footballer Eusebio is enough to send the masses into messianic rapture and if you pass any backstreet tasca on a match day you will see eyes glued to snowy TVs featuring home-grown arch rivals Sporting or Benfica. Portugal is one of the top European destinations for golf breaks and there are championship courses framed by spectacular scenery in the Sintra mountains. A gallop on a Lusitano horse, the equine equivalent of an Aston Martin, is another perfect way to appreciate Sintras mystical forests or Cascais rugged coastline. With wind-lashed beaches and awesome rollers the surfer dude contingent is high in Lisbon, especially when nearby Guincho hosts its international surfing championship. For tamer water sports, theres also bodyboarding and windsurfing at the string of coastal resorts.
