French House, 49 Dean St, T 020-7437 2799. Mon-Sat 1100-2300, Sun 1200-2230. The other favourite haunt of the Soho set, a cosy, wood-panelled theatre bar where the wine is very good and beer served in half pints only. Player, 8 Broadwick St, T 020-7494 9125. Mon-Thu 1700-2400, Fri 1700-0100, Sat 1900-0100. DJs at the weekend in this otherwise chilled out and subtly sophisticated basement bar thats members only after 2300, so find your spot before then. Shaston Arms, Marshall St. Mon-Sat 1200-2300. A West Soho pub that seems to have wandered into town from deepest rural Dorset, complete with superb Badger beer. Two Floors, 3 Kingly St, T 020-7439 1007. Mon-Sat 1100-2300. Lively and scruffy cocktail bar that pretty much set the tone for west Soho when it opened and is still going strong. Bünker, 41 Earlham St, T 020-7240 0606. Daily 1100-2300. Another underground venue, airily done out in stainless steel and pale wood, where beer is brewed on the premises and theres a separate dining area for food at reasonable prices. Lamb and Flag, 33 Rose St, T 020-7497 9504. Mon-Thu, 1200- 2300, Fri and Sat 1200-2245, Sun 1200-2230. The most famous of the old-fashioned pubs in the area but its warm and woody interior and front courtyard can become too busy for its own good. Market Café, 21 The Piazza, T 020-7836 2137. Mon-Wed 1100- 2300, Thu-Sat 1100-0200, Sun 1200-2200. Admission £5 after 2100 Fri and Sat. In the southwest corner with a small terrace overlooking the courtyard in front of St Pauls Church, this is the best of the areas many very busy bars. The Red Lion, 1 Waverton St, T 020-7499 1307. Mon-Fri 1130- 2300, Sat 1800-2300, Sun 1800-2230. Tucked away, this place famously feels more like a country pub than many pubs in the country, with its snug panelled rooms and high-backed wooden benches. No music and an expensive but high-quality restaurant. Trader Vics, Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, T 020-7493 8000. Mon-Thu 1700-0100, Fri and Sat 1700-0300, Sun 1700-2330. With its South Island Beach bar theme and glamorous oriental waitresses, this is an old-timer that still delivers a kick with its famous hot rum cocktails served in shiver-me-timbers skull mugs.
