Oratory, 232 Brompton Rd, T 020-7584 3493. Daily 1200-2300. An unpretentious old-school wine bar and brasserie in an old building in the bowels of the Brompton Oratory.

Paxton’s Head, 153 Knightsbridge, T 020-7589 6627. Mon-Sat 1100-2300, Sun 1200-2230. Edwardian splendour with a very capable restaurant attached.

Champion, 12-13 Wells St, T 020-7323 1228. Mon-Sat 1100-2300, Sun 1200-2200. Beautifully decorated pub, its tiled and stained glass interior an antique homage to winning sportsmen.

Duke of York, 47 Rathbone St, T 020-7636 7065. Mon-Fri 1100- 2300. A cosy Greene King pub serving good beer and worth seeking out on the corner of the chi-chi shopping mews of Charlotte Pl.

Plough, 27 Museum St, T 020-7636 7964. Mon-Sat 1100-2300, Sun1200-2230. This is a larger, and often less packed, pub than the famous Museum Tavern at the end of the street. It too has a refurbished Victorian interior and serves up reasonable food.

The Social, 5 Little Portland St, T 020-7636 4992. Mon-Fri 1200- 2300, Sat 1300-2300. An industrialized music bar with hardcore sounds and demon cocktails in the basement. A popular pre-club warm-up venue and a trailblazer on the music bar scene.
