Vibe Bar, Truman Brewery, 95 Brick Lane, E1, T 020-7377 2899. Mon-Thu, Sun 1100-2330, Fri and Sat 1100-0100. Admission £3 after 2000 on Fri and Sat. Still the most happening destination around Brick Lane with a free internet terminal, a large courtyard drinking area, sofas, big tables and the latest dance tracks.

Bar Gansa, 2 Inverness St, Camden, T 020-7267 8909. Mon-Wed 1000-2400, Thu-Sat 1000-0100, Sun 1000-2330. A cool drinking-den and tapas bar favoured by the young and beautiful, although the music in the evenings can be deafening. Booking advisable from Thu-Sat.

Camden Head, Camden Walk, Islington, T 020-7359 0851. Mon- Sat 1100-2300, Sun 1100-2230. With a pleasant enough outside drinking area at the end of Camden Passage antiques market, this popular pub has a fine Victorian bar.

The Duke of Cambridge, 30 St Peter’s St, Islington, T 020-7359 3066. Mon-Sat 1100-2300, Sun 1100-2230. An excellent but quite expensive organic (even the wines and beers) gastropub that has become very popular with the locals, partly because of its outdoor drinking and dining opportunities.

Elbow Room, Chapel Market, Islington, T 020-7278 3244. Mon 1700-0200, Tue-Thu, Sun 1200-0200, Fri and Sat 1200-0300. Tue-Thu £3 after 2100, Fri and Sat £5 after 2100. With 10 pool tables for £9 a hour after 1900, £6 before, this is also a very lively and late dance club.

The Holly Bush, 22 Holly Mount, Hampstead, T 020-7435 2892. Mon-Sat 1200-2300, Sun 1200-2230. Apparently timeless old pub, much beloved by locals and visitors alike, in its own little square perched above Heath St. Best reached on foot up a flight of stone steps between 73 and 75 Heath St opposite the tube.

The Lansdowne, 90 Gloucester Av, Primrose Hill, T 020-7483 0409. Mon-Sat 1200-2300, Sun 1200-2230. A genteel gastropub that provides a welcome break from all the loud music and shouting on Camden High St.

Toast, 50 Hampstead High St, Hampstead, T 020-7431 2244. Daily 1200-2400. Something of a rarity in Hampstead, this lateish night cocktail bar above the tube station is beloved by 20-somethings who can’t be bothered heading into the West End.

The Bed Bar, 310 Portobello Rd, T 020-8969 4500. Mon-Thu 1700- 2300, Fri and Sat 1200-2300, Sun 1200-2230. Funky bar on the corner of Golborne Rd and Portobello, already “seriously in” as it likes to claim.
