As well as the posh separate restaurant upstairs, there’s a cosy nook at the back and summer or winter it’s a local favourite because it has remained an old-fashioned if quite expensive pub. Known to some simply as ‘under the Westway’ this ‘space’ houses artists’ and designers’ studios/offices and a bar/restaurant in “a dynamic building where work and play converge”. Good, simple and surprisingly cheap food and drink amongst trains, planes and automobiles – and all soundproofed. Bread and Roses, 68 Clapham Manor St, T 020-7498 1779. Mon- Sat 1100-2300; Sun 1200-2230. A Workers’ Beer Company co-operative in the middle of bourgeois Clapham, it plays host to poetry, comedy and music, though it’s best sampled on a Sunday when the Mwalimu Express, showcasing the music of a different African country each week, rolls into town with accompanying buffet.
