London has five airports: the largest, Heathrow, is the busiest in the world. The other long-haul airport, slightly smaller, is Gatwick. And then there’s Stansted, Luton and the exclusive City Airport. There are daily direct flights to them all from most provincial UK airports as well as much of Europe. Flights from North America arrive at Heathrow or Gatwick. Low-cost airlines generally fly into Gatwick, Stansted or Luton. Fares are highest from around early June to mid-September and also at Christmas and New Year. Flying on Friday or the weekend is often also more expensive. The best way to find a good deal is on the internet.

From the UK and Ireland Aer Lingus fly to Heathrow from Cork, Dublin and Shannon. British Airways fly to Heathrow from Aberdeen, Belfast City and International, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Jersey, Manchester and Newcastle. British Midland also fly to Heathrow from Aberdeen, Belfast (City) Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Stornoway, Teeside and Newcastle. Ryanair fly to Stansted and in some cases Luton from Blackpool, Derry, Dublin, Cork, Glasgow Prestwick, Kerry, Knock, Newquay and Shannon. Fly-Be fly to London City from Belfast City and Edinburgh. Air Southwest fly to Gatwick from Newquay and Plymouth.

From Continental Europe It is possible to fly direct to London from a huge number of European cities – especially since the arrival of the low fares airlines. British Airways fly to Heathrow, Gatwick and City airports as do Air France, Alitalia, KLM, Lufthansa, Iberia, SAS and Swiss LX. Easyjet fly to Gatwick, Luton and Stansted. Ryanair fly to Stansted. Flights can cost from as little as £20 on the low fares airlines if you book in advance and fly at off-peak times, or more than £500 for first class travel from Paris.

From North America It is possibile to fly direct to London from several North American cities including Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, Montréal, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, Vancouver and Washington. Major airlines that fly from North America to London (Heathrow) include: American Airlines, British Airways, Continental, Delta, United and Virgin.

Airport information Heathrow (LHR), T 0870-0000123, http://www.baa.co.uk">http://www.baa.co.uk, is about 20 miles west of London on the M4, just beyond the M25. Four terminals: 1 for most domestic flights, 2 for most European flights, 3 and 4 for international. Journey time to central London by underground (the cheapest option) is about 50 minutes; by Heathrow Express train ( T 0845-6001515) to Paddington about 15 minutes (£25 standard return). A taxi to central London will cost about £40 and take about 1 hour.

London Gatwick (LGW), T 0870-0002468, http://www.baa.co.uk">http://www.baa.co.uk, is 30 miles southwest of London on the M23, near Crawley. Two terminals: North and South. Journey time to central London by Gatwick Express ( T 0845-8501530) to Victoria about 30 minutes (£21.50 standard return). A taxi to central London will cost about £75.

London City (LCY), Royal Dock, T 020-7646 0000, http://www.londoncityairport.com">http://www.londoncityairport.com, is 6 miles east of the City of London. There’s a 5-minute shuttle bus to Canning Town (£2.50) from where you can get the Jubilee Line or Docklands Light Railway into central London. A taxi to the centre will cost about £25.

London Luton (LTN), T 01582-405100, http://www.london- luton.co.uk, is about 30 miles north of central London on the A1. A coach to Victoria takes 1 hour 30 mins and costs £12 return. City Thameslink trains run frequently throughout the day, cost £20.80 for a standard return and take 30 mins. A taxi to central London will cost around £55.

London Stansted (STN), T 0870-000303, http://www.stansted airport.net, is also about 30 miles north of central London on the M11. Stansted Express trains to London Liverpool Street (standard return £24) depart frequently and take about 45 mins. A taxi to central London will cost around £85.
