Opened by Richard D’Oyly Carte in 1889, the Savoy retains a reputation for the understated and traditional British comfort of its 263 rooms, with superb views over the river from the 4th floor and above. Art deco luxury on the top floor and funky new cuisine in the old-fashioned Savoy Grill.

L One Aldwych, 1 Aldwych, T 020-7300 1000, http://www.onealdwych. co.uk. Award-winning modern designer hotel with 105 rooms, complete with an extensive art collection, huge swimming pool and plenty of subtle and not-so-subtle style notes.

A Strand Palace, Strand, T 0870-4008702. Newly refurbished but rather impersonal rooms (all 784 of them), in a good position near Covent Garden though.

B Royal Adelphi, 21 Villiers St, T 020-7930 8764, http://www.royal adephi.co.uk. Very central, small hotel with 47 rooms, not much changed since the 1960s, but clean and friendly with a 24-hour bar.

C Strand Continental, 142 Strand, T 020-7836 4880. Pretty basic but convenient Indian hotel with running hot and cold water in 24 bedrooms. Above the India Club restaurant.

L St Martin’s Lane, 45 St Martin’s Lane, T 0800-634 5500, http://www.ianschragerhotels.com">http://www.ianschragerhotels.com. Ian Schrager’s media favourite, designed by minimalist Philippe Starck, with a restaurant doing classic French and modern European, the awesome Light Bar and the Seabar for seafood.

B Manzi’s, 1/2 Leicester St, T 020-7734 0224, http://www.manzis.co.uk. Fifteen smallish, clean rooms with bathrooms en suite, 70 years old, above the famous fish restaurant, popular with business travellers as well as tourists.

L Sanderson, 50 Berners St, T 020-7300 9500, http://www.ianschrager hotels.com. 150 rooms. The latest in the ultra- modern Philippe Starck-designed chain that includes the St Martin’s Lane Hotel. Ultra-chic Spoon Plus restaurant, Purple Bar for residents only and Lobby Bar open to the public until 0100 nightly.
