Greenwich and Docklands Festival (1st 3 weeks) T 020-8305 1818; http://www.festival.org. Vibrant and very successful arts festival featuring traditional markets, music, dance, theatre and fireworks.

Clerkenwell Festival (19 or nearest Sun) T 020-7251 6311, http://www.clerkenwell.org. Based around the Italian festival of Our Lady of Mount Carmel out of the RC church of St Peter’s, Clerkenwell Rd, followed by a sagra street festival, with a big Friday music night.

BBC Henry Wood Promenade Concerts (late Jul to mid-Sep) http://www.bbc.co.uk/proms. ‘The Proms’, a series of classical concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and on the last night more like a rugby match.

Shoreditch Festival (Sun mid-Jul) 182 Hoxton St, T 020-7613 2727. Organized by Shoreditch Ourway, a local festival in fashionable Hoxton continuing to celebrate the area’s indigenous spirit.

Kenwood Open Air Concerts (weekends through Jul and Aug). T 020-8348 1286. Open-air lakeside concerts with fireworks in the grounds of the grand Adam house overlooking London.
