Brixton Academy, 211 Stockwell Rd, T 020-7771 2000. An old Victorian hall that has a capacity which attracts big acts while not appearing overlarge, it is invariably full. Kentish Town Forum, 9-17 Highgate Rd, T 020-7344 0044. Undoubtedly one of the best venues in London. Underworld, 174 Camden High St, T 020- 74821932. A wide selection of mainstream and more underground rock sounds at one of the (comparatively) larger Camden venues. 12 Bar Club Denmark Pl, Denmark St, T 020-7916 6989, tickets T 020-7209 2248. A fusion of country, folk and funk in intimate and friendly surroundings. A bar extension and new restaurant can only enhance a club whose reputation has soared in recent years making it one of Londons finest. The Africa Centre, 38 King St, T 020-7836 1973. On first entry, resembles an ill-equipped youth club, though the bona fide African bands here most Fridays are absolutely top notch. Cecil Sharp House, 2 Regents Park Rd, Camden, T 020-7485 2206. Open 1900, nights vary, £3-6. Undiluted and traditional, leader in the otherwise under-represented field of folk. The Jazz Café, 3 Parkway, T 020-7916 6060. Despite the name, it also presents an eclectic mix of world, funk and folk, as well as its jazz staple. It often pulls in the big names. Ronnie Scotts, 47 Frith St, T 020-7439 0747. Open from 2030. Mon-Thu £15, Fri and Sat £20. Still smokin like a train and often needs to be booked a fortnight in advance. The Mecca of the central jazz scene still boasts some fine jazz and no visiting enthusiast can seriously miss paying the place a visit.
