The most characterful place to eat cheaply around here. Set menus at £12 for old-style curries at formica tables on linoleum floors with yellow walls. A very Indian institution, since 1950. A name that has long been associated with fish has been given an overhaul by the people responsible for The Ivy and Le Caprice. An Italian old-timer on the edge of Chinatown, Manzis has been around for over 70 years, drawing in a generally sedate crowd of regulars who come for its superbly old-fashioned Italian service and traditional ways with fish. £££ Imperial ChinaWhite Bear Yard, 25a Lisle St, T 020-7734 3388. Another large Chinese restaurant, with the added attraction of being hidden away in the tranquility of its own courtyard off Lisle St and recently thoroughly re-decorated, doing very good dim sum until 1700 as well as a wide range of good value Cantonese dishes. ££ Fung Shing, 15 Lisle St, T 020-7437 1539. Daily 1200-2330. A Chinatown favourite with a good reputation for its seafood and Cantonese cooking. One of the first restaurants in London to serve up Chinese haute cuisine, standards are still high.
