Probably the funkiest basement Chinese in the capital, with its blue-lit banquettes and stylish décor and a Michelin star for the food to boot. Traditional French restaurant expert at nouvelle cuisine and with two Michelin stars. £££ Back To Basics, 21a Foley St, T 020-7436 2181. Mon-Sat 1200-1500, 1800-2230. A very good destination for seafood and a cheerful little place at the lower end of this bracket. ££ Rasa Samudra, 5 Charlotte St, T 020-7637 0222. Mon-Sat 1200-1500, 1800-2300. This is the most laid-back branch of the excellent and expanding Rasa chain, distinguished from the others by doing seafood alongside the famously fragrant vegetarian south Indian dishes and also having a smoking section. ££ RK Stanley, 6 Little Portland St, T 020-7462 0099. Mon-Sat 1200-2300. Very good purveyors of fine sausages and real ale in a stylish modern British take on American diner-style eating and drinking. ££ Eagle Bar Diner, 3-5 Rathbone Pl, T 020-7637 1418. Mon-Sat 1200-1500, 1900-2300, Sun 1900-2200. Possibly inspired by the success of RK Stanley, a fairly pricey but pretty cool cod-American diner doing big burgers by day and cocktails by night. ££ Sardo, 45 Grafton Way, T 020-7387 2521. Mon-Sat 1200-1500, 1900-2300, Sun 1900-2200. A reasonably priced and very popular little Sardinian restaurant.
