Dotted Line

££ Mildred’s Wholefood Café, 58 Greek St, T 020-7494 1634. Mon-Sat 1200-2300. A very popular licensed vegetarian, clean and non-smoking, that has hung in here since the beginning of the wholefood revolution.

££ Randall and Aubin, 16 Brewer St, T 020-7287 4447. Mon-Sat 1200-2300, Sun 1600-2230. Popular for fish (although not that cheap) this is a bustling bistro-style seafood stop with bar-stool counters and open kitchen. Good for oysters and champagne in the afternoon.

££ Satsuma, 56 Wardour St, T 020-7437 8338. Mon and Tue 1200- 2245, Wed and Thu 1200-2330, Fri and Sat 1200-2400, Sun 1200-2230. Just down the road, a happening, well-established Japanese joint doing fine ramen soups and good value bento boxes.

££ Zilli Fish, 36-40 Brewer St, T 020-7734 8649. Mon-Sat 1200- 2315. A slightly more formal and traditional place for fish, this was the original restaurant of the expanding empire of the far-from-retiring Aldo Zilli, and standards remain high, making booking essential later in the week.

£ Centrale, 16 Moor St, T 020- 7437 5513. Mon-Sat 1200-2100. Old-school, Italian fast-comfort-food joint, serving up great bowlfuls of pasta and minestrone at very low prices. Intimate and loveable, but it closes early. BYOB.

£ Masala Zone, 9 Marshall St, T 020-7287 9966. Mon-Fri 1200- 1445, 1730-2300, Sat 1230-2300, Sun 1230-1530, 1800-1030. A busy and bustling Indian restaurant specializing in street food from Mumbai and recipes from southwest India, serving food all day and often packed.

£ Pollo, 20 Old Compton St, T 020-7734 5917. Daily 1200-2400. Last orders 2330. The best-known and biggest (although also very ‘intimate’) of the fasta pasta providers in Soho, and still an experience. The basement regularly sups until late.

£££ The Ivy, 1 West St, T 020-7836 4751. Daily 1200-1430, 1730- 2400. Wood panelling, stained glass, modern art, superb service and Italianate brasserie food have made The Ivy’s tables the most sought after in London. Popular with thespians and wealthy families, the well-deserved hype has ensured that booking weeks in advance is the only way of enjoying an evening meal here.

££ Calabash at the Africa Centre, 38 King St, T 020-7836 1976. Mon-Sat 1230-1500, 1800-2230. One of the best African restaurants in London, occupying a cosy basement which also hosts excellent African live music in a laid-back atmosphere.
