££ Calabash at the Africa Centre, 38 King St, T 020-7836 1976. Mon-Sat 1230-1500, 1800-2230. One of the best African restaurants in London, occupying a cosy basement which also hosts excellent African live music in a laid-back atmosphere.

££ Joe Allen, 13 Exeter St, T 020-7836 0651. Mon-Sat 1200-2445, Sun 1130-2330. Quite hard to find but definitely worth the effort. The modern American menu served up in this traditional check-tableclothed basement diner never fails to please a host of theatre-going regulars. Top end of this bracket.

£ Food For Thought, 31 Neal St, T 020-7836 0239. Mon-Sat 1200-2035, Sun 1200-1700. Perenially popular, this is a very good-value vegetarian place. Bring your own wine.

£ The Rock and Sole Plaice, 47 Endell St, T 020-7836 3785. Mon-Sat 1130-1130, Sun 1200-2230. Probably the best option for a cheap meal is in one of the cafés listed below. Otherwise, famously good fish and chips can be had here.

£££ The Greenhouse, 27a Hay’s Mews, T 020-7499 3331. Mon- Fri 1200-1430, 1830-2300, Sat 1830-2300. Less posing and more cosseting goes on here, where a good-value (and busy) modern British set lunch is £23 for two courses Mon-Fri. The evening menu in the comfortable basement is well worth the expense.

£££ Al Hamra, 31-33 Shepherd Market, T 020-7493 1954. Daily 1200-2330. Serving good Lebanese food in an attractive room, Al Hamra has been around as long as anyone can remember. There are tables outside if you want to observe the street life of this strange little corner of London.

£££ Kaya, 42 Albemarle St, T 020-7499 0622. Mon-Sat 1200-1500, 1800-2300. Rated as the finest Korean restaurant in London. It specializes in table-barbecues and traditional dishes from the region of Seoul. Set menus £40 and £45 per person.

£££ The Mirabelle, 56 Curzon St, T 020-7499 4636. Mon-Sat 1200- 1430, 1800-2330, Sun 1200-1400, 1800-2230. Marco Pierre White re-opened this classic Mayfair restaurant in the 1990s to rave reviews. Everything here justifies the average £90 tab for two, from the impeccable service to the presentation of top- notch French-style food. Dining en plein air is available in summer.

£££ Momo, 25 Heddon St, T 020-7434 4040. Mon-Sat 1200-1415, 1900-2330, Sun 1200-1415, 1900-2300. Much hyped but justifiably so, Momo is a North African dining experience (about £50 a head) with a distinctly metropolitan approach to taking reservations (booking weeks ahead is advised in high season). Next door, Mô, is a much cheaper Moroccan snack bar run by the same people. Mon and Tue 1100-2300, Wed 1200-2300, Thu-Sat 1200-2400.
