Conrans atmospheric overhaul of one of Londons most fashionable addresses has proved to be one of his most successful and reasonably priced brasserie-style ventures. Even a drink or light meal at the bar has a sense of occasion thanks to the efficient staff and the glamour of the dramatically lit subterranean interior. £££ Shumi, 23 St Jamess St, T 020-7747 9380. A swish, minimalist place thats caused quite a stir with an Italian-Japanese menu, but a surprisingly discreet large restaurant nonetheless. £££ The Wolseley,160 Piccadilly, T 020-7499 6996. Mon-Fri 0700- 2400, Sat and Sun 0900-2400. The most recent venture of the people behind the Ivy (see above), with a booking buzz to match. Smart dining in a former bank building in the shadow of the Ritz. Careful planning is usually required to eat a full meal here, but the coffee and drinks bar is open all day and night. £ The ICA CaféThe Mall, T 020-7930 8619. Mon-Fri 1200-1430, 1700-2300, Sat and Sun 1200-1600. £1.50 day membership required. Offers imaginative meals, several vegetarian, that are good value at about £4.50-£7 each. £ The Laughing Halibut, Strutton Ground, T 020-7799 2844. Mon-Sat 1115-1600. Perfectly decent fish and chips to eat in or takeaway. £££ Boisdale, 15 Eccleston St, T 020-7730 6922. Mon-Fri 1200- 1430, 1900-2315, Sat 1900-2315. One of Londons very few specifically Scottish restaurants (with a French twist). Its old- school whisky and cigar room is a treat. Theres also another bar, the Macdonald Bar (Mon-Sat until 0100) at the back of the main restaurant. The whole creaking complex can become impossibly busy with shirt-sleeved bonhommie but its a cheerful place. £££ Nahm, 5 Halkin St, T 020-7333 1234. The most sophisticated Vietnamese restaurant in the capital, a Michelin-starred dining experience in the super-chic Halkin Hotel. ££ Oliveto, 49 Elizabeth St, T 020-7730 0074. Mon-Sat 1200-1500, 1900-2300, Sun 1900-2200. A swish spot for some top-class and reasonably priced pizzas and pastas.
