Dotted Line

£££ Locanda Locatelli, 8 Seymour St, T 020-7935 9088. Mon-Sat 1200-1500, 1900-2300. Designed by the same team as the bar at Claridges, with superb Italian cooking (fish dishes are a forte), Georgia Locatelli has made quite a name for himself since working at the Savoy. Booking ahead is strongly advised.

£££ Villandry, 170 Great Portland St, T 020-7631 3131. Mon-Sat 0800-2300, Sun 1200-1600. Top-notch French cuisine with amazing continental comestibles on sale out front.

£££ The Providores, 109 Marylebone High St, T 020-7935 6175. Open for tapas Mon-Fri 0900-1100, for full meals 1200-1500, 1800- 2300. Sat and Sun 1000-1100. Another very good restaurant in the area is Providores, with its busy, cheerful and stylish little tapas bar on the ground floor and some fine Iberian-New Zealand recipes and excellent wines served with a friendly smile.

£££ Defune 34 George St, T 020-7935 8311. Mon-Sat 1200-1430, 1800-2230, Sun 1800-2230. One of the better Japanese restaurants in the area, with a wonderfully lit cavernous basement and some very good softshell crab on the menu.

££ The Golden Hind, 73 Marylebone Lane, T 020-7486 3644. Mon-Fri 1200-1500, 1800-2200, Sat 1800-2200. An old-school eat-in or takeaway fish and chip shop done up in timeless style but perhaps more expensive than you might expect.

££ Kerala, 15 Great Castle St, T 020-7580 2125. Mon-Sat 1200- 1500, 1730-2300, Sun 1230-1500, 1730-2200. A busy south Indian restaurant near Oxford Circus, very popular with the local BBC types and not as expensive as many around here.

£ Golden Eagle, 59 Marylebone Lane, T 020-7935 3228. Mon-Sat 1100-2300. A pub that does scrummy O’Keiths sausage baguettes at lunchtimes.

£ Patogh, 8 Crawford Pl, T 020-7262 4015. Daily 1330-2330. Nearer the Edgware Rd, unfussy and unlicensed (BYOB) Persian food can be enjoyed here.

£££ Hakkasan, 8 Hanway Pl, T 020-7907 1888. Mon-Sat 1200- 1500, 1900-2300, Sun. Probably the funkiest basement Chinese in the capital, with its blue-lit banquettes and stylish décor and a Michelin star for the food to boot. Expensive but worth it.
