Another very good restaurant in the area is Providores, with its busy, cheerful and stylish little tapas bar on the ground floor and some fine Iberian-New Zealand recipes and excellent wines served with a friendly smile. £££ Defune 34 George St, T 020-7935 8311. One of the better Japanese restaurants in the area, with a wonderfully lit cavernous basement and some very good softshell crab on the menu. ££ The Golden Hind, 73 Marylebone Lane, T 020-7486 3644. An old-school eat-in or takeaway fish and chip shop done up in timeless style but perhaps more expensive than you might expect. ££ Kerala, 15 Great Castle St, T 020-7580 2125. A busy south Indian restaurant near Oxford Circus, very popular with the local BBC types and not as expensive as many around here. £ Golden Eagle, 59 Marylebone Lane, T 020-7935 3228. Mon-Sat 1100-2300. A pub that does scrummy OKeiths sausage baguettes at lunchtimes. £ Patogh, 8 Crawford Pl, T 020-7262 4015. Daily 1330-2330. Nearer the Edgware Rd, unfussy and unlicensed (BYOB) Persian food can be enjoyed here. £££ Hakkasan, 8 Hanway Pl, T 020-7907 1888. Mon-Sat 1200- 1500, 1900-2300, Sun. Probably the funkiest basement Chinese in the capital, with its blue-lit banquettes and stylish décor and a Michelin star for the food to boot. Expensive but worth it.
