London is not the loveliest city in the world, nor the most antique, romantic, or mysterious. Far from exotic, its not the richest, largest, or even most happening place on the planet either. All of these in parts, its still quite impossible to resist. Civilized, improvised, sophisticated and alive, London wins all comers over in the end. A workaday, endlessly surprising mess, very much the capital of the UK, and very British, its also a global town that has grown up thanks to other nations. Neither ancient nor modern, though erudite and grand, much of it hardly feels like a proper city at all. Its not a Gotham or even Paris. The Romans, who founded Londinium in the first century AD, failed to impose any kind of order on its street plan, and no one has succeeded since. In fact Londons streets, despite their enormous extent, are small, haphazard and human in scale. With such magnificent trees, river views and murky weather, with its thriving culture and driven soul, like nowhere else on earth this teeming muddle works its way into your heart.
