Pre-booking essential at weekends. Rowing boats for a paddle around can be hired in the summer in Hyde Park, Regent’s Park and Battersea Park. Available (and really only sensible) in the summer only at Serpentine Lido, Hyde Park, T 020-7298 2100, Hampstead Heath Ponds, T 020-7485 4491, Evian Lido, Brockwell Park, Brixton, T 020-7274 3088, and Pools on the Park, Richmond, T 020-8940 0561. You can witness this traditional contest for supremacy between England’s two most famous universities from either bank of the Thames along the whole length of the course, but the best viewpoints are Putney Bridge, Putney Embankment and Bishops Park at the start of the race, Hammersmith and Barnes in the middle, and Dukes Meadows and Chiswick Bridge at the finish.
