Seven days will give you a chance to explore some of Madrids more offbeat sights, like the Museo Cerralbo or Museo Lazaro Galdiano, mansions stuffed with eclectic art collections; or the Fábrica Real de Tapices, where tapestries are made as they were in the time of the Habsburgs; or the delightful Museo Sorolla, devoted to the painter known as the Spanish Impressionist. Try out some of the fancy gourmet tapas bars in the Austrias neighbourhood (west of the Plaza Mayor), splash out on dinner at Zalacaín, or catch a drag show at Gula Gula. Take a couple of day trips to the ancient cities of Toledo, Segovia and Avila; the latter two are set in the beautiful sierras which are surprisingly close to Madrid if you want to do a bit of hiking, mountain biking or even skiing.
