La Divina Comedia, C Almadén 14. Metro Atocha. Wed-Sun 2100-0300, closed Mon-Tue. Cool, candle-lit bar with deep ochre walls and lamps made from popcorn boxes. The Mexican owner mixes a mean margarita.

Garamond, C Claudio Coello 10, T 91 578 19 74. Metro Retiro. 1800-0330, until 0430 Fri-Sat. A favourite with thesps and TV celebrities, this is a chi chi cocktail bar and disco, with occasional live music.

Cardamomo, C Echegaray 15, T 91 369 07 57. Metro Sevilla. Tue-Sun 2100-0330. Despite its dated look – all vintage posters and fake memorabilia – this is a cool spot which offers regular live music, including some excellent jazz, flamenco and salsa.

Oui, C Cervantes 7, T 91 521 84 15. Metro Antón Martín. Wed-Sun 1900-0300, closed Mon-Tue. Laid-back, low-lit lounge bar where you can chill out with a cocktail on a cushioned banquette. Regular DJs at weekends, when the bar is crammed.

El Parnasón, C Moratín 25, T 91 420 19 75. Metro Antón Martín. Sun-Thu 2000-2430, Fri-Sat 2000-0330. Dim, tiny and deeply romantic bar crammed with bizarre bric-a-brac; there’s a red velvet salon at the back and the fantastic cocktails are served in goldfish bowls (well, nearly).

Viva Madrid, C Fernandez González 7, T 91 521 36 40. Metro Sol or Sevilla. 1800-0200. Huge, beautifully tiled bar on two levels, with paddle fans, simple tapas and DJ sessions at weekends. An ex-pat favourite, with a summer terrace and pricey drinks.

El 21, C Toledo 21, T 91 366 28 59. Metro Sol. Tue-Sun 1130-1540 and 1830-2300, Sat until 0100. Dusty old-fashioned bar with fading bullfighting posters and a crowd of elderly regulars. It’s become an institution with bright young things getting ready for the long night ahead.

El Barbú, C Santiago 3, T 91 542 56 98. Metro Opera. Tue-Sun 2000-0100. Low-lit, slinky café and cocktail bar popular with 30-somethings and a wonderfully romantic back room furnished with baroque sofas.
