La Peluquería, C Ave María 44. Metro Lavapiés. 1200-0300. Look out for the old, tiled entrance to this former hairdressers’ (hence the name). Inside is a laid-back, cosy bar where you can sip mint tea or a cocktail, or pick up a rug or piece of jewellery; most of what you see is for sale.

La Ventura, C Olmo 31, T 91 468 04 54. Metro Antón Martín. Tue-Sat 2200-0500. You’d never think it from the outside, but this is one of the best places to hear Madrid’s top DJs spinning drum’n’bass, electronica and trip hop. The word is out and it’s always packed with a mixed international crowd.

Bluefish, C San Andrés 26, T T 91 448 67 65. Metro Bilbao. Tue-Sun 1300-1600 and 2000-0100. This stylish café is also a great place for cocktails.

Byron Café, C San Andrés 32, T 615 860 906. Metro Bilbao. 1630-0330, Fri and Sat until 0430. Closed Sun. Wildly psychedelic murals are the backdrop for coffees and cocktails. At night, the mellow music cranks up a gear.

Café Antik, C Hortaleza 4, T 91 522 21 43. Metro Gran Vía. Tue-Sun 1700-0200. This flamboyant, quirkily decorated cocktail bar is painted in eye-popping colours and specializes in Caribbean cocktails like caipirinhas and mojítos.

Café del Mercado, C Fuencarral 43. Metro Tribunal. Thu-Sat 2200-0300. Young trendies pack out this industrial-style bar in the basement of the hip Mercado de Fuencarral shopping complex. Great sofas for lounging.

Café Oliver, C Almirante 12, T 91 521 73 79. Metro Banco de España. Tue-Sat 2100-0300. Upstairs is a chic French bistro (unmissable weekend brunches), downstairs is the lounge bar, full of beautiful people sipping expertly mixed cocktails.

El Café de la Palma, C Palma 62, T 91 522 50 31, http://www.cafedela palma.net Metro Noviciado. 1800-0200. Excellent chill-out area at the back, comfortable booths in the main area and regular live gigs. Café and bar.

Chicote, Gran Vía 12, T 91 532 67 37, http://www.tripfamily.com Metro Gran Vía. Mon-Thu 2100-0300, Fri-Sat until 0400. The grandaddy of all Madrileño cocktail bars, famously a favourite with Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra. Chicote has preserved its stunning art deco decor and its impossibly glamorous air. Lounge music after midnight.
