Trendy, mellow Moroccan-style tearoom and bar with mosaic tables, wall hangings, lanterns and candles, and cushioned benches. Delicious couscous dishes, as well as a special from a different country each day. Live music on Fridays, menú del día for e7.50.

Café La Unión, C Unión 1, T 91 542 55 63. Metro Opera. 1700- 0300, until late on Fri and Sat, Sun 1700-0130. Stylish, airy café with changing art exhibitions, friendly staff and a mellow atmosphere; great place for a chat at any time. Fantastic mojitos, among the best in Madrid.

Café Barbieri, C Ave María 45, T 91 527 36 58. Metro Lavapiés. 1500-0200, until 0300 Fri-Sat. Oozing turn-of- the-20th-century charm and filled with burnished mirrors and battered wooden tables. The classical music and sheaf of newspapers make it the perfect spot to while away the afternooon.
