Dotted Line

As a major European capital, Madrid hosts the finest dance companies from around the world and you might also get a chance to see the Madrid-based Ballet Nacional de España (Spanish National Ballet), or the more contemporary Compañía Nacional de Danza. Look out too for Victor Ullate’s Ballet de la Comunidad de Madrid, an experimental mix of classical and contemporary ballet. Barcelona is better known for its experimental dance, but there is usually plenty going on in Madrid if you dig through the listings magazines mentioned above and the Sala Cuarta Pared (see below) often hosts interesting contemporary dance. The annual Madrid en Danza festival is a good chance to check out up-and-coming dance groups. Madrid’s flamenco scene is as vibrant as anywhere in Spain; there are dozens of places to hear and see flamenco in all its styles, from the most traditional to the latest trends, inspired by dancers like Joaquín Cortés or Joaquín Grilo, and music groups like Ketama who have added a contemporary twist to the traditional movements and music.

Centro Cultural de la Villa, Plaza de Colón s/n, T 91 575 60 80. Metro Colón. Madrid’s main municipal arts centre, with an interesting programme of dance, music and drama. It regularly hosts zarzuela during the summer, and is one of the main venues for Madrid en Danza, the annual dance festival.

Sala Cuarta Pared, C Ercilla 7, Arganzuela, T 91 517 23 17. Metro Embajadores. This is one of the best venues in Madrid for contemporary dance and is also a good place to find experimental drama productions.

Teatro de Madrid, Av de la Ilustración, T 91 740 53 72. Metro Barrio del Pilar. This new theatre in the northwest of the city hosts contemporary drama and dance performances.

Teatro Real, Plaza de Isabel II, T 91 516 06 60. Metro Opera. Madrid’s beautifully restored opera house provides an opulent venue for opera and ballet.

Café de Chinitas, C Torrija 7, T 91 559 51 35. Metro Santo Domingo. Closed Sun. Dinner and a flamenco performance at one of the oldest flamenco venues (tablaos) in the city. The performers are well known for their excellence, but it’s very touristy and expensive. Book well in advance.

Candela, C Olmo 2, T 91 467 33 82. Metro Antón Martín. A celebrated flamenco bar which hosts occasional performances and is very popular with flamenco artists and those who come to gawp at them. The atmosphere gets better later on.

Larios Café, C Silva, 4, T 91 547 93 94. Metro Santo Domingo or Callao. 2100-0400. Gorgeous, award-winning art deco-esque interior; Cuban food in the restaurant and salsa, flamenco and funk on the dance floor. Restaurant-bar-club venue.

Las Carboneras, Plaza del Conde de Miranda 1, T 91 542 86 77. Metro Sol. Flamenco tablao, which has breath- takingly skilful dancers, musicians and singers, but is slightly lacking in atmosphere.
