The easiest way of getting to Madrid is by air; flights are remarkably cheap, particularly if you shop around on the internet. Book well in advance to get the best deals. Most airlines have abandoned the restriction that travel must include a Saturday night stay. The high season is from mid-May to mid-September, except August, when Madrileños sensibly abandon their baking city to tourists. Prices can fall dramatically between November and February. Trains from Paris or other parts of Europe are scenic but take ages although you can travel overnight on the comfortable and surprisingly inexpensive Elipsis trains from Paris. If you want to travel cheaply, the coach is an option, but the 36-hour journey from the UK is only for masochists or those with student cards entitling them to worthwhile reductions. If you drive, park the car when you get to Madrid; driving around the city is horrendous.
