High up on the fifth floor of a lovely 19th-century building, this is a very comfortable hostal with attractive rooms decorated in light floral prints, en suite bathrooms with hairdryers and efficient staff.

On a lively street in the Santa Ana area, this offers crisply furnished traditional rooms and is perfectly located for the nightlife. If you choose a balcony room bring earplugs or stay out very, very late. All rooms have bathrooms and TV.

This hostal is a big favourite because the friendly owners have made it feel like a home away from home. There’s a cosy lounge, each room has been decorated with pretty blue prints and all have en suite bathrooms.

E Hostal Dulcinea, C Cervantes 19, T 91 429 93 09, F 91 369 25 69. Metro Antón Martín. Right at the top of a renovated old building, this is a very charming hostal. The best rooms have balconies with views out across the rooftops.
