C Asturias, C Sevilla 2, T 91 429 66 76, F 91 429 40 36, http://www.chh.es Metro Sevilla. This handsome, old hotel is close to the Puerta del Sol; inside rooms are the quietest, but the outside rooms have wrought-iron balconies for watching the action on the street below. D Moderno, C Arenal 2, T 91 531 09 00, F 91 531 35 50, info@hotel-moderno.com Metro Sol. Agreeable, modest hotel which has been recently renovated and offers good value for the amenities. D Paris, C Alcalá 2, T 91 521 64 91, F 91 531 01 88. Metro Sol. One of the most historic hotels in the city, this was once the luxury choice par excellence. A century (and a couple of refurbishments) later, the rooms have become a monument to 1960s kitsch. Still, it does offer a creaky, old- fashioned charm and the Tío Pepe sign still blazes from the rooftop. A Tryp Ambassador, Cuesta de Santo Domingo 5, T 91 541 67 00, F 91 559 10 40, http://www.tryp.es Metro Opera. A chain, but set in the magnificent former palace of the Duques de Granada. Many of the original fittings have been retained, although the well-equipped rooms are blandly decorated in universal chain hotel style. B Los Condes, C Los Libreros 7, Madrid, T 91 521 5455, F 91 521 7882, info@hotel-loscondes.com Metro Callao. Set in a quiet street lined with bookshops, this is a handsome hotel set in a turn-of-the-20th-century building. Rooms are comfortably, if rather fussily, decorated and prices are very good for the amenities. Affiliated with the Best Western, although independently owned and operated. B Santo Domingo, Plaza Santo Domingo 13, T 91 547 98 00, F 91 547 59 95, http://www.hotelsantodomingo.com Metro Santo Domingo. This 16th-century mansion used to be the headquarters of the Inquisition, which should give your dreams an odd twist. Its now an elegant hotel, affiliated with Best Western, but still offers personal service and individually decorated rooms with plenty of swathed chintz. Some rooms have hydromassage baths. D HH Campomanes, C Campomanes 4, T 91 548 85 48, http://www.hhcampomanes.com Metro Opera. A far cry from the pseudo-rustic theme of most small hotels; this boasts ultra-slick minimalist decor throughout, charming staff, perfect central location and a very reasonable price. Highly recommended. D Puerta de Toledo, Glorieta Puerta de Toledo 4, T 91 474 71 00. Metro Puerta de Toledo. Another of the dated, utterly Spanish hotels which sprang up in the 1960s and 1970s. This is staffed by important-looking men with big moustaches, which adds to the sense of going back in time. Rooms have been modernised and are sleek, quiet and well-equipped. B Emperador, Gran Vía 53, T 91 547 2800, F 91 547 2817, hemperador@sei.es Metro Callao. A very popular centrally located hotel with elegant original fittings and a stunning rooftop pool, open to non-guests for e25.
