Madrids theatrical tradition stretches back to the Golden Age of Lope de Vega, Calderón de la Barca and Tirso de Molina, and the city is strewn with dozens of venues featuring all kinds of work from the traditional renditions of the classics to avant-garde contemporary performances. The most prominent classical theatre companies, Centro Dramático Nacional and the Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico, are based at the Teatro María Guerrero and the Teatro de la Comedia respectively.
