A week is enough to cover Marrakech and region thoroughly. For those with an interest in things architectural (and a hire car), three days is enough to cover Marrakech thoroughly whilst taking it at a relatively easy pace. A long half day to do the Palace quarter and another long half day for the souks, the Musée de Marrakech and the Medersa Ben Youssef. The head for Essaouira for a relaxing couple of days on the Ocean. From Essaouira, Safi is an easy day trip, too. In spring or early autumn, contrast the bustle of Marrakech with a couple of sleepy days at the small resort of Oualidia, eating at the fish restaurants. Another option is to loop across the spectacular Tizi-n-Test pass to Taroudant, Marrakechs little sister, for a night, then up to Essaouira. The Tizi-n-Test route is for drivers with a good head for heights. In a week, you could also contrast Marrakech with three nights up in the mountains, doing a spot of walking out of Setti Fatma or Imlil/Aremd. Riding can be arranged at Ouirgane.
