With a day free at the end of a conference or hiking trip, you can just about cram in the main sights of Marrakech and still have a large Moroccan evening meal. Starting early, get to the sights in the Museum Quarter south of Jemaâ el Fna. Visit the Saâdian tombs and the great palaces (the ruined Badi, the Dar Si Saïd for its museum). Textile and carpet buffs must not miss the Maison Tiskiouine. After a very small lunch (in Guéliz or a cheap place off Jemaâ el Fna) return to your hotel for a siesta before tackling the northern part of the médina. Find your way through from chic Mouassine via the Medersa Ben Youssef to Bab Debbagh, home of that smelliest of attractions, the tanneries. Expect to get slightly lost before someone guides you to the main souks for shopping. As the sun goes down, get back to Jemaâ el Fna to see the entertainments. Unless youve reserved for slap-up Marrakchi gastronomics at a discreet riad restaurant in the médina, eat at one of the barbecue restaurants on la Place. Try a bowl of steamed snails, for example.
