Dotted Line

The best antique shops and art galleries are in Guéliz but there are two other concentrations of antique sellers, on the pedestrian Rue Dar el Bacha (a couple of large antique emporia) and around the Mouassine Mosque (smaller shops with bits of old silver, textiles etc).

Adolfo de Velasco, Hotel La Mamounia, T 044-445900. The ageless Adolfo, he of the wafting caftan and imperial gaze, began his career a while back in Cadiz. He’s the man to contact if you’re short of an exquisite Indian screen or two. Haut décor for the Palmeraie set. (There is a second de Velasco shop in Tangiers.)

Amazonite, 94 Blvd Mansour Eddahbi, Guéliz, T 044-449926. Mon-Sat 0930-1300 and 1500-1930. Almost opposite the Odissea Italian restaurant. A long-established address, much visited by small, upmarket tour groups. Best buys: old silver, Moroccan ceramics, bibelots of various kinds. Expensive.

Bab Fteuh, a push and a shove away from the Café Argana. In among the shop fronts selling plastic household goods and clothes, look out for the entrances to a couple of fondouks (former merchants’ quarters), now specializing in old stuff. (The entrance to the bigger one is practically next to the only plant stall). Metalwork, green ceramics from Tamegroute, bits of camel litters, bedouin camping equipment. Certain nomadic tribes are travelling very light these days. Some very good buys.

Dar Bou Ziane, 20-21 Rue Sidi el Yamani, Leksour, T 044-443349. Asiatic, Syrian and Moroccan antiques on premises which used to be a flour mill. The place to buy your marble fountain or Damascene mother-of-pearl love seat. Everything for the ideal oriental home including wild wrought iron and ram-horn chandeliers by designer Med. But who knows how many kasbahs were pillaged to stock their antique wooden beams section?

Khalid Art Gallery, 14 Rue Dar el Bacha, T 044-442410. Daily 0930-1900. Huge range of daggers and doors, ceramics and carpets, jewellery, textiles and even manuscripts.

L’Orientaliste, 15 Rue de la Liberté. Upstairs some of the smaller ceramics and metal items are exclusives (which you might find in a workshop in a corner of the souks). Take a look in the basement for old travel posters, mid-20th-century paintings and semi-antiques. Something for everyone here.

Marco Polo, 55 Blvd Zerktouni, Guéliz, T 044-435355, marcopolo@cybernet.net.ma. 0900-1900, closed Sun. In the arcade on the same pavement as the Café des Négociants. This is where you go to spend a few thousand euros on an Art Déco bronze, Kashmiri textiles or 400 kg garden urns. Where Nero takes Miss Thing shopping for her new villa in the Palmeraie. Smooth reception.

Matisse Art Gallery, Immeuble Ghandouri, 61 Rue de Yougoslavie, Guéliz, T 044-448326. Mon-Sat 0930-1300 and 1500-1930. A handy, pleasant gallery, owned by one Youssef Falaky who can advise on trends in the local art scene. Features contemporary Moroccan artists. Framing service too.
