Matisse Art Gallery, Immeuble Ghandouri, 61 Rue de Yougoslavie, Guéliz, T 044-448326. Mon-Sat 0930-1300 and 1500-1930. A handy, pleasant gallery, owned by one Youssef Falaky who can advise on trends in the local art scene. Features contemporary Moroccan artists. Framing service too.

Souk Semmarine, make your way into the médina at the ‘entrance’ just opposite the Hotel-Résidence de la Place. After some winding you eventually come through an arch into the wide, paved souk. There are some big antique shops and carpet emporia here, some of them very expensive.

Galerie d’art Frédéric Daamgard, Av Oqba ibn Nafia’a, Essaouira, T 044-784446. Daily 1000-1300 and 1500-1900. This is the grandfather of Essaouira’s numerous art galleries. Daamgard, Danish by origin, Souiri by adoption, was the first to seek out local talents and promote the local naïve school of painting. Take a look here before browsing round the mini-galleries scattered in odd nooks across the médina.
