The French daily press and some English-language newspapers can be found at the kiosks in the vicinity of Rond-Point Abd-el-Moumen, in Guéliz. The biggest kiosk, easily spotted, is next to the tourist office and roughly opposite the Café des Négociants. As for books, despite the presence of the Université Cadi Ayyad, Marrakech is not the most intellectual of towns. Nevertheless, there are a couple of places where you can stock up on large coffee table books, maps and recent Moroccan fiction in French. Dar Chérifa, 8 Derb Chorfa el Kebir, Mouassine, T 044-4426463. Restored building which is home to Marrakech- Riads, who rent quality restored houses. A good place to leaf through some of the numerous coffee table books on Morocco, even if youre not in purchasing mode. Occasional literary events. Librairie dArt ACR, 55 Blvd Zerktouni, Guéliz, http://www.acr- edition.com. In a small arcade close to the Café des Négociants. Left as you face the café. The Moroccan outlet for ACR, French publisher of expensive art books founded by one M Rafif. Small selection of guides and novels. Worth a look if you have lots of time. Librairie Chatr, under the arcades at the top end of Av Mohammed V, near the Shell station and the intersection with Rue Abd el-Krim el-Khattabi. The extensive book section, the best in the city, is at the back of the shop, with coffee table books and guidebooks, including Atlas Mountain guides in French on the back wall and novels in English in the far right hand corner. The front part has drawing and office materials and some good postcards. NB The bookshop opposite, once a very good second to the Librairie Chatr, is currently closed. Librairie-Papeterie el Ghazzali, 51 Bab Agnaou, handily next to the Café Lipton just off Jemaâ el Fna. North African novels in French, some maps and guide books, also postcards, newspapers and office stuff. Small and a bit frenetic. Musée de Marrakech, Place Ben Youssef, T 044-390911/112. Small bookshop stocking most notably exhibition catalogues and a good selection of reproduction old travel posters and cards. Stamps sometimes available. Riad Tamsna, 23 Derb Zanka Daika, Riad Zitoun el Jedid, T 044- 385272, http://www.tamsna.com. Has an eclectic selection of books and reproductions of old travel posters, worth a look if youve stopped by to have a tapas on the terrace or lunch.
