R Café Argana, on the north side of Jemaâ el Fna, look out for sign. Quite a rendez-vous point for trendy, courting couples and tourists. Excellent pâtisseries and good view from terraces but the staff are often overwhelmed. R Café de la CTM, over the Hotel CTM, Jemaâ el Fna. When the Argana is packed, you can usually find a place to sit here. The clientèle tends towards the backpacker and young local rather than the well-heeled fashionista. Drinks and service very basic. For exceedingly good cakes youre better off at the Argana. R Café Lipton (and others on the Rue Bab Agnaou). The pedestrian street starting with the palm trees and leading up to the Hotel Tazi has several strategic cafés for people-watching. R Pâtisserie des Princes, Rue Bab Agnaou. Along with the Pâtisserie Hilton in Guéliz, a top pâtisserie address. Discreet courting couples hide away in the tea-rooms upstairs, locals come in to pick up their orders for parties and receptions. Fill your face with bastilla here. R Café du Musée de Marrakech, Place Ben Youssef. Small café serving mint tea, soft drinks and a small selection of pastries. Perhaps its key advantages are its clean loos and the fact that you can allow kids to run around a bit without worrying about speeding mopeds. A useful halt between souks and the Medersa Ben Youssef and Dar Belarj. (You can visit the café without going into the museum.) R Amandine, 97 Rue Mohammed el Beqqal, T 044-449612. 0800- 2030, closes in the afternoon, 1300-1600 during the week. Clean, well-run salon de thé, a little more expensive than the run of the mill. For chocolate and pastries. Recommended. R Kenzemène, Rue Mohammed el Beqqal, round corner from La Taverne. Very polite salon de thé where women can consume tea and pâtisseries unmolested. For refreshments during shopping therapy. Recommended. R Pâtisserie Belkabir, Rue de la Liberté, on the corner with Rue Tarak Ibnou Ziad. A long-established traditional Moroccan cake-place. There is a similar establishment at the other end of Rue de la Liberté, near Côté Sud and other bijou boutiques. R Pâtisserie Hilton, just off Rond-Point Abd el Moumen, on the pedestrian street. A top address for Moroccan petits-fours and the like. Get yourself a mini-pastilla for lunch (or afternoon snack). Gift-wrapped pâtisseries to take home. Definitely worth a look.
