Côté Sud, 4 Rue de la Liberté. As you come from the médina on Av Mohammed V, turn left after Place Vendôme clothes shop; Côté Sud is about 30 m along on right. Boutique owned by craft specialist Sabine Hmami-Bastin. Good choice of embroidery, ceramics and small paintings and frames, also perfumes, candles and incense. Larger items in the basement. Many articles made especially for the shop. DAltro 1, 21 Fhal Chidmi, Mouassine, T 044-444289. Owner Abd el Moumen Mhaidi. Minimalist decorative thingies. Lamp bases in tadelakt, simple wood picture frames. Worth a look during a meander through Mouassine. La Maison de Bali, 65 Av Mohammed V, opposite the food market, T 044-436312, maisondebali.com. Second shop in Immeuble Ghandouri. Accessories, textiles and lighting in the Av Mohammed V shop, imported teak furniture in the Ghandouri arcade. Give your riad an Indonesian feel. Mohammed Ahmouchi, 48 Place Ben Youssef, near the Musée de Marrakech. High quality hand-painted frames and boxes, tables and lattice-work. Place des Ferblantiers, aka Batha el Qzadriya, near the Palais Badi and Bab Berrima, the metal-workers souk. The place to look for those metal garden accessories which were (no doubt) all the rage two summers ago. Items as sold in ethnic déco shops at home, but at a fifth the price. Enjoy the smell and hiss of the forges. Scènes de lin, 70 Rue de la Liberté, T 044-436108. Almost opposite the Hotel du Pacha. Mon-Sat 0930 to 1230 and 1430-1930. Rather nice linge de maison, as they say at Marie Claire magazine. Tablecloths, cushions, bedspreads, all very beige. Discreet embroidery to order. Souk el Khémis, near Bab el Khémis, away from the main sites at the northern end of the médina. The Marrakech junk market. You may be lucky and pick up old Hotel Mamounia key fobs or some relic of the Protectorate days. Moving away from junk these days, but worth a look. Have a bowl of bssara (pea and chick-pea broth). NB Watch your pockets. Co-operative Artisanale des Marqueteurs, 6 Rue Khalid ibn Oualid, Essaouira. Wide range of objects in the fragrant thuya wood for which Essaouira is famous: frames and boxes, lamp-bases and chess-boards. Quality uneven. Best boutique? Jawad Baksso. La Sqala, around the Bastion Nord, Essaouira, youll find lots of ateliers producing thuya wood items. Open until about 1930. Prices reasonable, souvenirs of all shapes and sizes.
