The Imazighen of the High Atlas have a strong tradition of what would be labelled folk-dancing in a European context. The ahidous and ahouach are group dances originally performed during the moussems, the annual village get-togethers celebrating a successful harvest. Unless you arrive in a mountain village on the right weekend, your best chance of seeing the Amazigh dances is at the annual Festival des arts et traditions populaires, held on July weekends in the Palais Badi. While many young Marrakchis are not averse to a boogie in the citys various nightclubs, there is no contemporary dance scene to speak of. (If in Casablanca, you might see whether the Ballet Zinoun, the countrys only contemporary dance troupe, has anything on. Check the press (LEconomiste, Tel Quel) for details.)
