The fresh food market in Guéliz is worth a quick look to see what the prosperous Moroccan family is putting in its shopping basket. Most European packaged foods are available in Morocco – at a price – in some form or other. Try the city’s Marjane hypermarket.

Alcohol is not as universally available as in Europe. Note that the smaller addresses often close on Fridays for sale of alcohol and that during Ramadan, they may close for the duration of the holy month. If you’re just over for a few days, then stock up at the duty- free before getting to Morocco, thus avoiding a trip up to Guéliz. Although beer and wine are cheap, spirits are generally more expensive than in northern Europe.

Achkid, coming from the médina, turn left at the Wafa Bank on Av Mohammed V; shop is on your left about 30 m on after the junction. The best known stock-everything shop in Guéliz. (Achkid is Tachelhit for ‘come along’.)

Hassan Oumlile, shop 19 in the central food market in Guéliz, in the middle, on your right as you go through the main entrance. (0800-1400, 1600-late, Fri and Sun 0800-1400). Has a good range of booze. More importantly, they will deliver wine to riads in the médina. Telephone your order on T 044- 433386.

Entrepot Alimentaire, a couple of doors left of the Hotel Nessim on Av Mohammed V. An excellent selection of imported wines and alcohols. (NB Further up the Av Mohammed V, just after the restaurant Le Petit Poucet, a good épicerie on the corner of Rue Mohammed Beqqal sells wine and beer in addition to all the usual packaged groceries.)

Hypermarché Marjane, on the Casablanca road. Take a petit taxi. Vast but rather appalling supermarket stocking just about everything. Importantly, Europeans can buy alcohol here during Ramadan. Towards the end of Ramadan, Moroccans in the carpark will come up to you with cash, asking you to go in for them to buy beers for their first post-holy-month booze-up.

Co-operative Amal, Village de l’Arganier, Tamanar, T 044- 788141. One of the best places for argan oil. Understand the production process of this most nourishing (and fragile) of oils by visiting this women’s cooperative. Sample prices: 20 g bottle of amlou, 40dh, argan oil, 25cl for 80dh.

Essaouira Médina, 8 Rue ibn Rochd, Essaouira. Property rental agency also sells some argan products. If you miss this too, then Casablanca Airport also has a shop selling argan oil after Customs.
