Dotted Line

RRR-RR Dar Mima, Derb Zaouia el Kadriya, Riad Zitoun Kedim, not far from the Dar Si Said, T 044-385252. Evenings only, closed Wed. A la carte Moroccan eating for around 200dh. Popular with foreign residents. Portions said to be on the small side. Eat upstairs in one of the smaller salons.

RR Nid’Cigogne, Place des Tombeaux-Saâdiens, T 044-443348. Open daily for lunch. The ‘Stork’s Nest’ is a reliable little place for salads and grillades after soldiering round the museum neighbourhood. The big plus is the roof terrace with view of aforementioned Cigogne’s domestic arrangements.

RRR Le Jacaranda, 32 Blvd Mohammed Zerktouni (opposite Café Les Négociants), T 044-447215. Closed Tue and Wed lunchtime. Long-standing restaurant with good reputation. Elaborate French food, strong on fish and creamy sauces, bar. Eating à la carte, expect to pay 250dh. The menus are much cheaper. Terrace very noisy (and polluted, it’s next to a busy traffic light), so sit upstairs inside for quiet. Occasional live music.

RRR La Trattoria, 179 Rue Mohammed el Beqqal, T 044-432641, http://www.latrattoriamarrakech.com. To locate, find La Taverne (opposite Cinéma Le Colisée near rond-point Abd el Moumen), which is on corner of Blvd Zerktouni and Rue Mohammed el Beqqal. La Trattoria is 2 blocks down, near to Café L’Amandine. The soul of the original owner, the baroque Gian Carlo, hovers over this place and standards are maintained. Probably the city’s best Italian restaurant with an excellent selection of wines and superb desserts.

RR Catanzaro, Rue Tarak ibn Ziad, behind the market in Guéliz, next to the Hotel Toulousain, T 044-433731. Reservation essential for the evening. Excellent Italian food. Full meal for around 150dh, though you can spend far less. A very popular lunchtime address.

RR Chez Jack’line, 63 Av Mohammed V, T 044-447547. Atmospheric, a 1950s bistro. Serves French and Italian cuisine which is ideal when you’ve just spent 2 weeks up in the mountains eating tagine. There is a resident parrot, too. The lion cub has long gone, sadly, as has the monkey. Jack’line soldiers on, a Marrakech original, in a Ronnie Corbet sort of way.

RR La Conch, Rue Loubnène, not far from the Guéliz food market, T 044-436471. Basque specialities, tapas in a Basque-themed bar. All kind of exotic in a Marrakech setting.

RR L’Entrecôte, 55 Blvd Zerktouni, T 044-449428, manager Abdel Ghani Khatir’s mobile T 06-1245042. From the rond-point Abd el Moumen, facing Les Négociants, go left. L’Entrecote is on your right, about 20 m from the roundabout, in a courtyard building. Serves particularly good meat. Menu 120dh, lunchtime quick menu 70dh, 150dh for a good feed. Rather dark dining room best in evening but recommended nevertheless.

RR Le Jardin des Arts, 6/7 Rue Sakia el Hamra, T 044-446634. Near the Hotel Amine and Café le Diamant Vert. In Semlalia rather than Guéliz (so you’ll need to take a cab) but included here for convenience. A newish French restaurant that fills the gap in the Semlalia hotel zone. Said to be really quite good although some reports say it’s overpriced.
