Dotted Line

R Tiffany, under the arcade on Av Mohammed V, near the post office. Basic meals and breakfasts, good service, stays open during the day in Ramadan.

RRR Le Val de la Roseraie, Ouirgane BP 769, Marrakech 40000, T 044-439128. The Roseraie makes a welcome up-market lunch stop on the road up to Tin Mal. The food is variable but along with the nearby Sanglier qui fume, it’s the last really comfy eatery before you get to Taroudant over the mountains.

RR Auberge Au Sanglier Qui Fume, Ouirgane, CP 42150, T 044-485707/08. ‘The smoking wild boar’, even figures (occasionally) on the menu. French country food and a bar. A reliable address, typical of a fast-disappearing sort of restaurant. Once upon a time, there were licensed auberge-ish type places like this across Morocco. Thanks to the expansion of tourism since the mid-1990s, they’ve experienced something of a renaissance.

RRR Le KM9 (pronounced ‘kilomètre-neuf’) , 9 km from Marrakech, as the name suggests, on the Ourika road, T 044-376373. Daily for lunch and 0800 till late. Four set-price menus from 170-290dh. A sort of country pad-cum- eatery. Very comfy bar with a dining area to the rear. Prize pasta is the order of the day, but there’s plenty of other good offerings, too. Unfortunately, unless you spend quite a bit on a taxi (200dh), it’s not really viable as an evening out from Marrakech without your own transport. Popular with the branché Casablanca weekend set.

RR Auberge Ramuntcho, at 50 km from RAK, T 044-444521, 06-1165182. Best feature of the Ramuntcho’s restaurant is the outside terrace. Food variable – clientèle includes numerous tour groups.

RR Dar Piano, Oulmès, T 044-484842, 06-1342884. Closed Jun-Aug. Good menu at 150dh served in small restaurant – worth a stop if you want something more than a roadside grill. European management.

RR Le Maquis, just before the roadside settlement of Oulmès, T 044-484531. Basic menus at 55dh and 120dh. On the way up to Setti Fatma, Le Maquis makes a reasonable lunch-stop, several levels above your average tajineries. Franco-Moroccan management.

NB If you opt to eat near the village ‘square’, make sure you know what you’ll be paying in advance of ordering.

R Le Lion d’or, Telouet. In addition to the cheap tajineries in the village, there is now a slightly ‘up-market’ option near the Kasbah: 60dh gets you salad, tajine and fruit. Numerous stickers testify to the passage of tour groups, and the loos are clean.
