So you thought Marrakech was all oases of cool and fizzing souks? Amazing adventures in the great outdoors are possible, too. Just a couple of hours’ drive from Marrakech, the ocean beaches and mountain valleys are attracting the active. Trekkers take to the valleys and plateaux of the High Atlas while surf-sport enthusiasts head for Essaouira. Skiing is possible in Oukaïmeden, birdwatchers will find unique species on the Atlantic coast, golfers have three courses to chose from in the Marrakech palm groves and most big hotels have spas. The big Marrakchi spectator sport is koura (football), and there are two bahja (teams) in the national league. Local lads hone their skills in the médina’s streets and on stony ‘pitches’ outside the ramparts. Both national and European league matches are watched in the city’s blokier cafés. However, given Morocco’s poor performance in World Cups, the Olympic successes of the country’s long-distance runners are a much greater source of pride. Athletes like Saïd Aouita, Nawwal Moutawakil and Hichem Guerrouj enjoy star status – and the upcoming generation gets plenty of state support.
