A week in and around the city gives you time to explore the Centro Storico properly as well as take in more of the citys many good museums, castles and palaces. Its also long enough to see more of the history outside the city, such as Herculaneum, Oplontis or Cuma and the Campi Flegrei. The Amalfi Coast is also reachable, and you might want to stay over, perhaps in Ravello, which makes an excellent base for walks and for exploring the area, and where you could also go to a classical music concert. Alternatively you might want to spend a couple of days on one of the islands. Capri is the more standard choice, though Ischia is equally beautiful and Procida is more unspoilt.
