Naples, always struggling to keep up with its past, was once a world centre for opera, theatre and popular song. Nowadays it cant quite match the heady days of Commedia dellArte, 17th- and 18th-century opera and O Sole Mio. However, since the beginning of Bassolinos 1990s arts-friendly regime, the contemporary Naples arts scene has begun to blossom. The city also does quite well out of old glories, with a prolific Baroque classical music scene, grand opera at the Teatro di San Carlo and a thriving jazz underworld. In film, Naples is the city that gave the world of cinema Sophia Loren, Vittorio De Sica and Totò in the 1950s and 60s, though it suffered a slowdown thereafter. In recent years it has seen something of a revival, with the Vesuviani directors winning some major international awards.
