Kinky Bar, via Cisterna dell'Olio 21, T 081-5521571. Free. Specializing in reggae and dub, Kinky Bar has a dance floor but mostly people here are too chilled out to use it. Vibes Bar, largo San Giovanni Maggiore 26/27, T 081-5513984. Mon-Fri 2000-0300, Sat-Sun 1900-0300. Lively Vibes Bar spills out into a quiet piazza near the university for most of the year and even in winter there never seem to be enough chairs. The atmosphere is loud and informal rather than sophisticated. Tempio di Bacco, vico San Domenico Maggiore 1, T 081-294354. This atmospheric wine bar is in old cellars just north of piazza San Domenico Maggiore. Blue lights, chains holding up tables, fish tanks, silver bunches of grapes and laid-back jazzy grooves all contribute to a distinctly chilled atmosphere. Wonderfully eclectic collection of glasses and good snacks. Le Bar, via Eldorado 7, piazzetta Marinari 18, borgo Marinari, T 081-7645722. Slightly more streetwise than some of its neighbours in borgo Marinari, Le Bar attracts a fashionable 20s/30s crowd and occasionally has live music. Seats outside face the other bars and restaurants. Transatlantico, Borgo Marinari, T 081-7648842. 1200-1600, 1900-0000, closed Tue. With plenty of outdoor seats on both sides, Transatlantico is a good (though pricey) place for either people- or yacht-watching. It has an up-market air, a good cocktail menu and some excellent desserts. Be Bop Bar, via Ferrigni 34, T 081-2451321. While the other venues on via Ferrigni have huge crowds of young people hanging around outside busy not doing very much, this place continues to groove to its own beat in a more laid-back kind of way. A very pleasant place to come and chat over a beer. La Focaccia Express, via Belledonne a Chiaia 31, T 081-412277. When youve had enough of squeezing your way to the bars of Chiaias top nightspots, this is a great place to come and chill with a beer and a tasty slice or two of focaccia pizza, piping hot from the oven. Away from the city, other locations around the bay tend to have a limited nightlife. The islands have little other than café-bars, though many of these do stay open late. Sorrentos cafés are supplemented by various English/Irish bars, none of which can be especially recommended. The Amalfi Coast fares slightly better, but only just. Africana, via Torre a Mare 2, Praiano T 089-874042. Mon-Sun Jun-Sep closed Oct-May. The Amalfi Coasts most famous club is accessible by boat transfer from both Amalfi and Positano. Set in caves above a beach the Africana has a glass-bottomed dancefloor through which you can look down on fish swimming below.
