Naples’ calendar of special events is dominated by Maggio dei Monumenti, when hundreds of talks, tours, concerts and exhibitions take place around the city, often in buildings that are closed for the rest of the year. The less well-publicized Settimana per la Cultura, in April, is also a good time for visiting monuments and museums, as hours are extended and most are free. Religious festivals are good for less tourist-orientated celebrations: Natale (Christmas) has nativity scene fever in via San Gregorio Armeno accompanied by concerts and other events and Pasqua (Easter) has colourful processions in Naples and all around the area. For a party try Capodanno (New Year) in piazza del Plebiscito or the July Neapolis Rock Festival. Outside the city in the summer discos often escape to the beaches and classical musicians take up position in dramatic outdoor settings such as the Villa Rufolo in Ravello.
