Dotted Line

From the UK and the rest of Europe Go fly twice daily from London Stansted to Naples. Book ahead and prepare to be flexible and you may get a return for as little as £50. Occasional special offers may be even better than this. At short notice, and at weekends and holiday periods, these prices can rise to £150 or more.

Alternatively, if you are prepared to take a more roundabout journey, it might be worth checking Ryanair for cheap flights to Rome, and doing the rest by train. Ryanair buses connect the airport with Rome Termini train station, from where there are frequent (approximately twice hourly) trains to Naples (a two-hour journey).

British Airways (Naples airport office T 081-7803087) run three services a day to London Gatwick. Transavia fly daily to and from Amsterdam. Alitalia fly to other Italian cities and to Paris. Air France also have daily flights to and from Paris.

From North America There are no direct flights to Naples from the US or Canada. Rome is the nearest place you can fly to, but most direct flights from the US go to Milan. Alitalia fly direct to Rome (and Milan) from New York and Toronto, as do Delta Airlines, but otherwise you will have to stop over (in a European city) before connecting to Naples. Flights start from around US$500 in low season, and from Los Angeles (usually via New York) will be nearer US$650 (in high season this can rise to over US$1,500). Other airlines that fly to Naples from the US via other European cities include: Air France, American Airlines, British Airways, Iberia, KLM, Lufthansa.

From Australia and New Zealand There are no direct flights to Naples (or anywhere else in Italy) from either Australia or New Zealand. You will have to change at least twice. You can fly to Milan and Rome via another European or Asian (eg Singapore, Kuala Lumpur) city, from where you will have to connnect again for Naples. Airlines that fly to European cities from Australia and New Zealand include: Alitalia, British Airways, Lufthansa, Malaysian Airlines, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Virgin Atlantic. The cost low season is likely to be at least A$1,700, rising to A$2,500 during high season.

Airport information Naples airport (Capodichino) is small enough to be easily manageable. It’s also not far from the city centre, making onward travel fairly easy. Buses to the centre (see below) are fairly good and you can connect to other services here. The information desk between the check-in area and the arrivals area is helpful (you can pick up a free copy of Qui Napoli here, check the latest tourist information and get some useful timetables). Flight info: T 848-888777 or T 081-7896259, http://www.gesac.it, 0530-0030. There are also a few shops and cafés.

There’s a hotel reservation desk (Promotel, 0900-2330) at the end of the airport near arrivals, a cashpoint which accepts cirrus and credit cards, and a cambio (bureau de change) as well as a couple of cafés and gift shops.

Airport buses The 3S Bus (’Service, Save money and Satisfaction’) runs every 15 minutes from 0600 until 2330 from outside the terminal building to the port via the Central Station in piazza Garibaldi (see below). Journey times are approximately 15 minutes to piazza Garibaldi and half an hour to the port. Despite its name, it’s actually a standard ANM orange city bus. Tickets are available from the hotel reservation desk, or from tabacchi or newsstands, for €0.77. It arrives and departs from outside Departures.

The swish, privately run CLP airport bus stopped running in spring 2002 but there should be a replacement service, probably running direct between the airport and the port of Naples. Ask at the Promotel desk for details. Take this bus to get to the islands.
